Class Representatives Receive Surprise Appreciation Gift at LUANAR
Student acknowledges leadership with symbolic gesture of farm produce

Final-year Communication and Journalism class representatives at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) on Monday, November 2025, received an unexpected token of appreciation from a fellow student in recognition of their service over the past four years.
Lingstone Nsema, a final-year student, presented fresh maize from his field to the four class representatives—Mary Mwambila, Butwa Mwakalagho, Milcah Chimoyo, and Trevor Khwalala—as a gesture of gratitude for what he described as their “dedicated leadership and commitment” throughout their academic journey.
Speaking during the brief presentation held on campus, Nsema said the gift was his way of acknowledging the effort that class representatives invest in coordinating coursework, communicating with lecturers, and supporting their peers.
"Class representatives work tirelessly, yet their efforts often go unnoticed,” he said. “I hope this gesture encourages others across LUANAR to appreciate their leaders—even something as small as data bundles or shared tokens can make a difference.”
The surprise presentation marks the first time the group of representatives has received such recognition since starting their programme four years ago. The students described the gesture as “heartfelt and encouraging”, noting that it reflects genuine appreciation rather than formality.
The event was witnessed by Edith Tsilizani, a LUANAR lecturer, who also received a share of the farm produce. Nsema, who cultivates crops and runs small entrepreneurship initiatives around Bunda Campus, said he believes in practising what he learns in class, particularly principles of communication, leadership, and community engagement.
He noted that entrepreneurship and journalism complement each other, as both require initiative, observation, and a commitment to serving communities.
Nsema emphasized that small acts of recognition can strengthen relationships within the university community and motivate students in leadership roles to continue serving effectively.
